The South West Coast

The road running from north of Colombo and following the coast all the way south and east to Hambantota is the busiest in Sri Lanka. Along this route are found most of the beach hotels and resorts, turtle hatcheries, the famous stilt fishermen and Galle with its World Heritage Dutch fort. Inland are some excellent wildlife reserves, as well as the famous elephant orphanage at Pinnawala.

Ranweli Holiday Village
Only accessible via pontoon ferry, the resort, near Waikkal just north of Colombo, has a near-private beach, plenty of sports options, pleasant bungalows and waterways perfect for nature boat trips. It is exceptionally family-friendly.

Blue Water Hotel
Designed by Sri Lanka’s most famous architect, Geoffrey Bawa, the impressively modernist beachfront hotel, set amongst coconut palms, has well appointed rooms (all with seaviews), two restaurants, three bars, a large child-friendly swimming pool, tennis court, very good curries and attentive service.

Galle

The town holds a very special World Heritage Site, Galle Fort and Old Town. Built on a promontory by the Dutch four centuries ago, it contains many well-preserved colonial buildings and exudes a profound sense of history. One can walk the high walls and enjoy the views out to sea, or wander the old cobble streets soaking in the atmosphere.

Lighthouse Hotel
A member of the Small Luxury Hotels of the World group, the hotel was designed by Geoffery Bawa and looks out over the Indian Ocean, bordered by a stretch of beach. There are 60 luxury rooms, each with central air-conditioning, private bathroom and private balcony with sea view.  Facilities include two swimming pools, fully equipped gymnasium, tennis courts, squash court, hair and beauty salon and full Ayurvedic health centre. The food here is extremely well prepared and presented.

Uda Walawe National Park

The park is renowned as the best place in Asia for observing wild elephant and your children will delight in seeing the large herds crossing the grasslands. The park is also excellent for raptors.

Centauria Hotel
A pleasant, simple hotel with lake-view rooms set by a lake,  restaurant and bar, swimming pool, cycling and Ayurvedic treatment centre. Very convenient for Uda Walawe.

Sinharaja Forest Reserve

Covering a mere 112 square kilometres, Sri Lanka’s only biological World Heritage Site is the last significant fragment of undisturbed rainforest left on the island. It has a high endemicity of trees, oddities such as the purple-faced leaf monkey (also endemic), and is famed among birdwatchers for mixed feeding flocks and for protecting the majority of the island’s endemic bird species. A priceless and rare natural jewel.

Boulder Garden
A remarkable, unique boutique hotel built into a jumble of huge granite boulders, bordered by rampant greenery. There is a small pool and bar cum restaurant - a comfortable caveman experience for all the family, to rival the Flintstones.

This relaxed yet full itinerary gives plenty of pleasurable time by the sea, while offering much of cultural and interior interest – while not by the sea, you will enjoy the benefit of having a private guide and vehicle. Boat trips along jungle waterways, watching baby elephants being bathed, marvelling at the Buddhist splendour of the Tooth Temple in Kandy, learning about tropical plants and swimming in warm seas and clear pools – all await you on this charming journey, perfect for families with younger children.
