The South East

A rugged and wild part of the island, this region is a haven for flora and fauna, especially in Yala. The beaches - long and windswept, with dangerous currents and crashing waves (no swimming allowed) – are backed by large sand dunes giving rise to lagoons, dry woodland and scrub bush.

Yala (Ruhuna) National Park

The premier wildlife location in Sri Lanka, Yala offers an almost African safari experience as well as an important Buddhist temple site. On game drives by jeep, one can usually view wild elephant, buffalo and boar, huge monitor lizards, macaque monkeys and many rare and endemic bird species: it is also the best place in south Asia to spot the elusive leopard, often seen and admired in Yala.

Yala Village
Situated between Yala and the south coast in 10 acres of wooded land, the well-run luxury lodge has comfortable twin/double bungalows, swimming pool and observation tower for wildlife viewing. There is also the Suite Julian, a marvellous “treehouse” room with balcony overlooking the surrounding forest, where leopard often wander.

This relaxed yet full itinerary gives plenty of pleasurable time by the sea, while offering much of cultural and interior interest – while not by the sea, you will enjoy the benefit of having a private guide and vehicle. Boat trips along jungle waterways, watching baby elephants being bathed, marvelling at the Buddhist splendour of the Tooth Temple in Kandy, learning about tropical plants and swimming in warm seas and clear pools – all await you on this charming journey, perfect for families with younger children. More suitable for older children, the wildlife locations in this excellent natural history tour are among the best in Sri Lanka.  After the seaside and cultural attractions of Galle, venture out on safari in Yala, famed for its leopards and much more. Then marvel at large herds of Asian elephant at Uda Walawe before enjoying jungle walks in the island’s last remaining viable area of rainforest in Sinharaja. Lastly, relax at a minimalist beach hotel designed by Sri Lanka’s most famous architect. Fantastic family fun for all. Find out more...
