Eastern RainforestsANDASIBE-MANTADIA NATIONAL PARK (ANALAMAZAOTRA / PERINET)A popular reserve reached by an easy drive from the capital, Andasibe-Mantadia National Park consists of two protected tracts of adjacent montane rainforest: Analamazaotra (usually known as Périnet) and Mantadia (or Mantady). Périnet offers the best chance to view the largest lemur, the indri, with its haunting call, as well as bamboo and brown lemurs, enigmatic insects such as the giraffe-necked weevil, giant millipedes and colourful birds such as vangas and couas. Goodman’s mouse lemur, greater dwarf lemur, and woolly lemur are some of the reserve’s nocturnal species. It is particularly rich in herpetofauna, with more than 100 species of frog, the largest leaf-tailed gecko and various chameleons. Nearby Mantadia boasts the agile diademed sifaka with its luxuriant orange, black and white fur, and the rare black-and-white ruffed lemur - shy and fast moving. Rare birds include mesites, ground rollers, greenbuls, asitys and more. The trails of Mantadia are more steep and slippery in wet weather than at Périnet.
The hotel is situated by a small lake surrounded by eucalypt forest. With comfortable heated bungalows, small swimming pool, main building with fireplace and good cooking, this is one of the best options for the area. Andasibe Hotel Located close to Andasibe-Mantadia National Park, this relatively new hotel offers accommodation in 12 comfortable and spacious air-conditioned bungalows with private bathroom, satellite TV, safe and mini bar. Each room also has a private terrace. Facilities at the hotel include a restaurant, bar and swimming pool. Probably the most comfortable choice in the area at time of writing. Eulophiella Lodge Named after a beautiful orchid found in the area, this lodge is located approximately 7km from Perinet reserve and 22km from Mantadia. Family accommodation consists of comfortable villas with en-suite bathrooms, hot water and good views of the nearby forest where the indri can often be heard calling in the mornings. Feon ny Ala Lodge A pleasant rustic hotel only 3km from Perinet, with simple yet attractive family accommodation in large wooden bungalows with private showers and hot water, good food and excellent location on a lake opposite primary rainforest, near the road where nocturnal walks are often taken.

IMPORTANT NOTE (1): Despite recent improvements, Madagascar still has some accommodation of a low standard, and a poor infrastructure including unreliable domestic flights and communications, and rough roads. Although we try to choose the best areas for families, many are isolated and far from medical and other services. Trails can be strenuous, campsites and park huts basic. We saw ten species of lemur which was clearly the highlight of the trip…I must say Madagascar is a hugely underrated destination. The wildlife, fabulous scenery, varied geography and the people make the country a very attractive active holiday destination. Mr A N, Bangkok. |
