Sarapiqui Region

This popular region on the Caribbean slopes boasts the eponymous river with its various rafting possibilities and the La Selva Biological Station for guided walks and rainforest education. Depending on where you stay, there is plenty of wildlife to be seen in the prolific forests, and otters have been spotted hunting for fish in the river.

La Quinta de Sarapiqui
The friendly lodge has trails within nine hectares of private reserve where colourful poison dart frogs and many butterfly and bird species are found. Each of the simple yet clean rooms is set amongst lush, tropical gardens. Activities include river floating or white-water rafting, birdwatching, mountain biking, riding, nature walks, swimming and visiting the lodge’s reforestation project, butterfly farm and educational insect museum.

Sueno Azul
Perhaps the area’s most stylish lodge, it benefits from a lovely riverside location, very comfortable rooms, lake, good pool, riding stables, spa, yoga and meditation centre and a small fragment of rainforest.

It would be very hard to beat this tour for its wide diversity and exceptional value.  From the wildlife-rich lowland rainforests of the Caribbean coast, ascend to an historical ranch-cum-lodge at 11,000 feet to marvel at a forest-clad, active volcano whose crater can be reached by horse, bike or on foot. Lastly, travel to the dry forest zone of Nicoya and a well-run beach resort with great family villas, excellent food and friendly service. A fine recipe for good memories. Find out more...
