Caribbean Coast

Much less extensive than the Pacific coast and often overlooked by visitors and locals alike, there are nevertheless many attractions to be discovered in the north and south of the Caribbean coast. For those wishing to visit Costa Rica in the European summer months, it is to be recommended for weather and wildlife reasons, since it can enjoy dry conditions while other parts of the country are wet.

Tortuguero National Park

The most popular location is Tortuguero in the north, a wildlife-rich, lowland rainforest of canals and waterways explored by foot and boat. The park is certainly one of the areas where wildlife is easily seen, including sloths, river turtles and capuchin and spider monkeys. Green and hawksbill turtles nest on the beaches from June to September, while leatherbacks and loggerheads come ashore from March to May. One cannot swim off the beaches since there are dangerous rip tides.

Mawamba Lodge
The lodge has comfortable rooms with private bathrooms, a swimming pool, jacuzzi, bar and restaurant, and a conference room where daily lectures on wildlife are given. The lodge runs a red-eye tree frog breeding programme and is located within a short walk of the beach. Included during a stay will be a guided forest walk and a boat tour through the waterways for wildlife spotting – you may also explore the lodge’s own private rainforest reserve.

Manatus Hotel
The luxury option in Tortuguero with lovely rooms, spa, gym, art gallery and pool, this lodge is located canal-side and offers canoeing, zip-lining, pedal boats and the usual tours within the national park.

It would be very hard to beat this tour for its wide diversity and exceptional value.  From the wildlife-rich lowland rainforests of the Caribbean coast, ascend to an historical ranch-cum-lodge at 11,000 feet to marvel at a forest-clad, active volcano whose crater can be reached by horse, bike or on foot. Lastly, travel to the dry forest zone of Nicoya and a well-run beach resort with great family villas, excellent food and friendly service. A fine recipe for good memories. Find out more...
