Sabah contains outstanding beaches and lovely, small tropical islands, many offering fantastic snorkelling, diving and nesting turtles. Just offshore from Kota Kinabalu is the Tunku Abdul Rahman National Park, a collection of islands with rainforest trails and good snorkelling.  

Rasa Ria Resort
Along the coast from Kota Kinabalu is this family-friendly Shangri-La resort set in 400 acres, with a two mile stretch of sandy beach, a private 64-acre rainforest reserve with hornbills and bear cats and an orang-utan education centre.  For leisure there is a wide range of water sports, spa, 18-hole golf course, cruise catamaran, quad safaris, tennis, horse riding, babysitting and a fully equipped Kids’ Club.

Tanjung Aru Resort
Another excellent Shangri-La beach resort close to Kota Kinabalu airport, with lovely peninsula setting, full service spa, impressive Kids’ Club with attached playground, children’s swimming pool, babysitting service and comfortable, inter-connecting rooms. Families can also take the shuttle to nearby Rasa Ria’s nature reserve for wildlife walks.

Selingan Island

The island lies off the east coast and is part of the Turtle Islands National Park where green and hawksbill turtles come to nest on a near-nightly basis - you can sometimes help release the young hatchlings back into the sea.

Lankayan Island

Green and hawksbill turtles visit this tiny, jewel-like island in the Sulu Sea (a 90 minute boat ride north of Sandakan) which has a beautiful white sand beach and fringing coral reef providing good snorkelling and diving directly from the shore.
